3 Practices to Engage Silence and the Presence of God


Practice a “Breath Prayer.”

Here’s a simple example from Scripture. Breathe in slowly and deeply as you whisper or think: “The Lord is my Shepherd…” Hold your breath for a second or two while being aware of God’s presence then exhale as you whisper or think: “…I shall not want.” Any short Bible passage can serve as a breath prayer.

Sit Quietly and Reflect.

Get up 5 minutes earlier than normal or stay up 5 minutes later than everyone else. Sit in a spot free from distractions and away from your phone. As your mind wanders recenter your scattered thoughts on God. Don’t ask for anything, just enjoy God’s presence in silence.

Practice Detachment.

At various points during your day pause and detach yourself from what’s weighing on you. Say the following to God, “Jesus, I surrender everything and everyone to you.” Repeat this or something similar as often as needed. If (and when) you find yourself reattached, detach again, and again.
