All In Together: Evelyn and Miles Bowler’s Story

Some stories of service are best told in pairs.
For Evelyn and Miles Bowler, being All In at Church on the Hill for the past 28 years has meant living out their faith together: loving people well, meeting real needs, and treating the church not just as a place they attend, but as family.
Family That Serves Together
Evelyn and Miles serve faithfully across the life of the church and beyond. Together, they teach the Friendship Class, serve with the Keenagers, help sort and deliver food with The Block Community Outreach, and support Celebrations of Life.
Miles is also part of the Tuesday and Thursday morning men’s groups, while Evelyn, alongside Lynda Stallard, visits senior shut-ins and those in the hospital, offering presence, prayer, and care.
Their motivation is simple and deeply rooted.
The people of Church on the Hill are family, and family shows up for one another.
“We love being a part of Church on the Hill. It’s our family, and we love to help our family.”
Loving Like Christ Calls Us To
Their heart for generosity extends beyond the church walls, especially through their involvement with The Block. Evelyn and Miles are passionate about ensuring children don’t go hungry and about reminding them they are seen and valued.
That heart was beautifully illustrated during a recent, unexpected moment.
While shopping for supplies to create birthday kits for children served by The Block, they had enough from their class offering to make 24 kits. A stranger noticed their cart and asked about the birthday kits she had heard about. After hearing the story, she thanked them for making kids feel special.
Later, she found them again in the store, and handed them a $25 gift card to help purchase supplies.
“What a blessing—for us and for her.”
A simple act of generosity sparked another. That’s how love multiplies.
Shaped by Serving
Volunteering has shaped Evelyn and Miles deeply: spiritually, emotionally, and relationally.
Serving has made them more aware of the needs around them, more generous with their time and resources, and more attentive to how God invites them to love others well.
They don’t just meet needs: they encourage, strengthen, and love one another as Christ instructed.
Outside of church, they enjoy retirement and staying connected with friends they worked with over the years continuing to invest in relationships wherever God places them.

When Evelyn and Miles encourage others who are considering volunteering, their advice is gentle and freeing.

Evelyn and Miles remind us that being All In doesn’t require extraordinary circumstances, just willing hearts.
