Devotionals to Strengthen Your Marriage

September 23, 2022 | Brian Butcher

One of the ways Church on the Hill desires to support our families is through the strengthening of marriages. Marriage has the potential to be this beautiful relationship where two become one, and God uses that relationship as one of the key ways to grow us in our Christlikeness. And yet marriage is challenging, and every marriage is unique. So, here are a few ideas of some resources that may help you in your marriage suggested by staff and church members. Some of these resources may be helpful for you and your spouse while others may not fit you as a couple.

  • The Meaning of Marriage: A Couple’s Devotional by Timothy and Kathy Keller. Keller’s book was something that Josey and I read while we were engaged and found it to be a helpful resource. This is a daily devotional for a year based on the book.
  • Your Best Us: Marriage is Easier Than You Think by Ted Lowe. Lowe is an author from our friends at Orange, the organization we use for our student and kids ministry curriculum. Your Best Us is a quick read, and highlights 4 habits to instill to have a stronger marriage.
  • The One Year Love Language Minute Devotional by Gary Chapman. Perhaps you have heard of the 5 love languages. I learned about this idea a few years back. Essentially, the core idea is that each person “speaks” a love language. It’s their preferred way of receiving or expressing love. It could be giving gifts or words of encouragement, you get the idea. This devotional gives a couple a quick read each day to remind them to speak your spouse’s love language and not just your own.
  • You and Me Forever: Marriage in Light of Eternity by Francis and Lisa Chan. Francis and Lisa Chan use scripture to look at what it means to have a healthy marriage, and it’s by focusing on something different than what you may think.
  • If you prefer a different medium, check out the The Marriage Podcast for Smart People. Featuring Caleb and Verlynda Simonyi-Gindale, a couple shares their insight and knowledge from their background in marriage and family therapy. Their Christian perspective combined with science and training help provide another resource for couples looking to strengthen or heal their marriages.
