Easy Ways to be a Good Neighbor
October 25, 2022 | Sarah Hobbs
The holiday season is coming and there are a lot of different ways we can love our neighbor this time of year! Being a good neighbor doesn’t take a lot of effort or money to accomplish. It just takes intentionality and a desire to be in community with each other.
Here are some no or low-cost ways you can be a good neighbor:
In November:
- Rake the leaves of a senior or neighbor who is in poor health;
- Invite a neighbor over to have Thanksgiving dinner with you and your family; or
- Volunteer at a soup kitchen or food distribution.
In December:
- Bake cookies and deliver to a neighbor;
- Help a neighbor hang Christmas lights on the exterior of their house;
- Write and deliver cards to your neighbors, house-bound seniors, or residents of an assisted living facility;
- Go Christmas caroling around your neighborhood; or
- Volunteer at events like our Wonderful Night or ring a bell for the Salvation Army.
These are just a few of the ways we can love our neighbors well. Once the holidays are over, these good acts don’t have to stop. We have the opportunity spread love and kindness every time we interact with someone through every season. Our neighbors are everyone we encounter, not just our immediate literal neighbors too. We can be a good neighbor year-round by returning someone’s shopping cart for them, sharing a bottle of water with an unhoused neighbor, or even just a friendly smile. If we all take just one moment to brighten someone else’s day, can you imagine the impact we can make in our community?
