For Sarah Wilson, serving isn’t something extra added onto church life. It’s simply part of what it means to belong to the body of Christ.

Over the last three years at Church on the Hill, Sarah has found joy in saying yes wherever God has called her to serve. Whether it's with Kids on the Hill and Life Group leadership, to serving Communion and supporting students as a PreK room mom at Sugar Hill Christian Academy.

And through every opportunity, one thing has become clear: serving connects people not just to a mission, but to one another.

We Are the Church

Sarah’s heart for serving flows from a deep understanding of what the church really is.

“I believe serving is just part of being part of a church. We are the church. A church is people. So to make the church thing happen I need to contribute.”

For Sarah, volunteering is not about obligation. It’s an outpouring of her relationship with Jesus and a way to use the gifts God has placed in her life to encourage others.

As she’s stepped into serving opportunities, she’s discovered something many people find when they go ALL IN: some of the strongest friendships and most meaningful memories are formed while serving side by side.

“The most fun part is that serving has helped me get to know other people in the church. You make great memories and bonds serving together.”

Serving Across Generations

One of Sarah’s most meaningful serving experiences happened during Serve Week when her Life Group served with Family Promise.

What made the moment especially powerful was watching children and adults serve together.

“It was incredible having our kids with us of various ages helping out as they could. And they really helped!”

Sarah loved watching her children learn not only through serving, but through the example of other faithful adults around them.

“I especially loved seeing my kids follow along with the other adults as they guided them in jobs. It was fantastic to be able to trust the mentorship and guidance of these other adults’ example to my kids.”

It was a picture of what it means to be ALL IN together: generations serving, learning, and growing side by side.

Finding Friendship and Spiritual Mentors

Serving has impacted Sarah spiritually, emotionally, and socially in ways she did not fully expect.

Through volunteering, she has built genuine friendships and found herself surrounded by people whose faith has quietly shaped her own walk with Christ.

“I’ve made wonderful friendships and been able to observe and learn from incredible spiritual mentors. I don’t even think they know they’ve been a mentor which is probably the best part!”

That kind of discipleship often happens in everyday moments: through conversations while setting up classrooms, serving meals, leading groups, or praying alongside others.

Because following Jesus was never meant to happen alone. We really are better together.

Jump In

For anyone unsure about volunteering, Sarah’s encouragement is simple:

“Jump in! Just try something and see if it sticks.”

She believes serving is one of the best ways to discover both community and calling.

“You will certainly connect with great people! Moreover, you’ll explore God’s calling on you and exercise the gifts He has given you.”

At Church on the Hill, ALL IN is not about doing everything. It’s about taking a next step, trusting God with your gifts, and allowing Him to use your yes to impact others.

And as Sarah’s story reminds us, sometimes the greatest transformation happens while serving alongside the people who become family.
