Jonah is one of the most well-known stories in the Bible. Yet, it is easy to miss the depth and beauty of this short, prophetic book.
The book of Jonah explores the life and work of a deeply flawed hero, the vast expanse of the grace of God, and God’s powerful commitment that everyone may be saved. This story of God’s work through a problematic prophet has something for each of us.
Join us at Church on the Hill as we explore Jonah’s journey and God’s unending grace starting on July 7.
In our first week, we'll set sail with Jonah as he attempts to flee from God's call, only to find himself caught in a raging storm. Through Jonah's disobedience and God's relentless pursuit, we'll discover the unfailing presence of God’s mercy even in the midst of our rebellion. In week two, we'll journey with Jonah into the depths of the sea, where he cries out to God from the belly of the fish. Through Jonah's prayer of repentance and deliverance, we'll witness the transformative power of God's grace and the hope that emerges from a desperate situation. In our third week, we'll witness Jonah's reluctant obedience as he finally delivers God's message of warning to the city of Nineveh. Through Jonah's proclamation and Nineveh's response, we'll explore the themes of repentance, redemption, and the surprising reach of God's mercy to all who seek Him. In our final week, we'll join Jonah under the shade of a plant as he wrestles with anger, frustration, and God's unrelenting compassion toward the repentant city of Nineveh. Through Jonah's confrontation with God and His gracious response, we'll grapple with our own attitudes toward those who don't meet our expectations and the expansive nature of God's love for all people.
We hope you'll plan your Sunday visit with us On The Hill for the Jonah series!
