Finding Peace in the Chaos- Preparing for a Meaningful Advent

November 14, 2024 | Kaylee Andrews

Advent is a season of reflection and anticipation for the birth of a savior, Jesus Christ. We get to sit with Jesus at the foot of the cross and be in peace knowing all he has done for us.

Often though, this season leading up to Christmas can easily turn into an endless to-do list and unrealistic goals for our families. Maybe you want to have the best decorations since everyone comes to your house for the special Holiday. If you’re the cook of the family, you carry a huge burden to make sure everyone is fed and satisfied. Gifts can become expensive, and fear starts to creep in if you feel like you won’t be able to get that special surprise for someone.

Whatever seems to be that “it” factor for you within the advent season, I want you to know it does not have to be that way. Your “it” factor is what keeps you from living into that peace of advent I believe Jesus has called us into.

We have two sides to this idea. Sometimes our “it” factor is changeable. Don’t worry if you have the best decorations, instead be thankful your house will be overflowing with loved ones. Remember, the excitement of a new gift will fade, but the memories of family time last forever. Everyone will get a full belly and be ready for a nap before it is even time to open gifts.

But, on the other side sometimes we have a challenge that might not be changeable. Sometimes family dynamics become difficult, and it is simply out of our control. Illness is a tough battle, especially around the holidays. Maybe this is your first holiday without someone special in your life, and you are not sure how to cope with it.

Your feelings are valid in this advent season, and I hear you. Although, this advent season can offer peace if we allow it to. Everything serves a purpose and Jesus has great plans for our lives.

1. Let go of the unchangeable and cling to a never changing Savior.

The good news of advent is Jesus is going to be born and come into the world as a savior. That will never change and will always stand true. Take the time you need to grieve what you can’t change and begin clinging to the good news. Jesus came to not just give us life but to give us an abundant life.

Take each day of advent to dwell in this space with Jesus and let him heal the broken parts of your spirit. An advent calendar could be an amazing outlet for you to stay on track. Get creative and create space for the Lord to fill up your heart.

If you have littles, teenagers, or even grown kids, this can be a family activity. Get everyone involved! If you are looking for an advent calendar our own Kids on the Hill is providing advent kits to families. Send an email to  to schedule a time to pick one up.

2. Practice peace during advent so Christmas is peaceful.

Go ahead and let go of the unrealistic goals you may have for you and your family. Traditions are amazing but they also can create chaos. It is okay to create new traditions that fit your family best.

Jesus wants us to try new ways to honor him and do it as a family. Life is busy and sometimes a few extra hours in a day would be incredible. But we have 24 hours and what we do with our time matters. Sit down with your family and set healthy boundaries with everyone this advent season. Discover what is going to eliminate chaos and invite peace into your home. This will allow advent to be more intentional and make Christmas a time of joy and true peace.

3. Spend time with your Savior.

As amazing as the holidays are, Jesus also wants your undivided attention. It is okay for you to break-away with the father. In the endless to-do list and the busyness of Christmas, dwell in that secret place with the Lord because he cares for you. He never intended for you to have a hectic and anxious filled holiday season.

Get a devotion that walks you through the advent season and fills up your cup. Develop devoted time for prayer and deep conversation with Jesus. Decide that the Holiday season is not just a time that comes and leaves but is a moment to get closer to an everlasting Savior.

Know that Jesus did not come into the world for us to create holidays and seasons that become overwhelming. Jesus came to give you new life and a purpose. Remember when the emotions begin to flow like a river this advent season, Jesus came to give you peace. Take time this advent season to discover that peace and know that Jesus loves you more than you will ever know.
