What I Wish I Knew: Advice From Moms
June 3, 2025 | Lyn Cantrell
We’ve all heard the saying, "I wish I knew then, what I know now." We would all like a little extra wisdom when it comes to certain tasks and responsibilities, but this can be especially so when it comes to parenting. If only we could learn from those who have been where we are!
Our Kids Ministry leaders are here to help! Being moms of children who are 3 months old to adulthood, below are valuable words that we hope help out moms who are looking for insight into these curious little people we’ve been given.
Encouragement for Motherhood
From Dennia, “I wish I knew, after giving birth, how hard the recovery process would be mentally and physically and to give myself grace. Perfection isn't real and real isn't perfect. Parenting looks different for everyone so do what works for your family. Love on yourself and make self-care mandatory.”
From Sarah, “The days are long, but the years fly by. Take the pictures...remember to make sure to include yourself in the pictures. I always wish I had more photos of myself with my children. Make memories and create traditions. The traditions will become what your children look most forward to.
There can be a lot of outside pressure that makes you feel like you have to do "all the things"...big, over-the-top birthday parties, out-of-this-world family vacations, the perfect, boutique clothing, etc, etc. Try not to get stressed out and beat yourself up trying to keep up with what everyone is doing on social media or what you see everyone else trying to keep up with.”
From Jen, “We need community. When I had babies---every Thursday I got together with another mom and one watched the other one's kids while the other of us went to the store. ALONE. When one came home with groceries - the other of us went to the store and the kids played all day. It was awesome. We need one another. It takes a village."
Take Care of You, Too
It is clear the common thread through these words is to take care of yourself. You cannot pour into your children, unless you are filled up.
This is especially important now that summer is here and our kids are with us, instead of school. Don’t forget - you get a summer too! Find a friend, share the load, and take care of you.
You are Seen and Loved
Most importantly, never forget Jesus is in this with you. He is there on the long days, the hot days, the no-nap days, the I’m bored days. He sees you, He loves you, and you are not alone.
You’re doing a great job, mom!
