Pictures of the Kingdom: The Unforgiving Servant
- Matthew Matt. 18:21-35

Jesus calls His followers to practice forgiveness as a defining part of life in God’s kingdom. Through the parable of the unforgiving servant, Jesus shows that believers who have received God’s immeasurable mercy should extend mercy to others. Forgiveness does not mean ignoring wrongdoing, remaining in an unsafe situation, or allowing continued abuse. Jesus teaches believers to address conflict honestly, involve trusted people when necessary, and establish healthy boundaries. Forgiveness and reconciliation are also different: forgiveness can be chosen by one person, while reconciliation requires repentance, responsibility, and change from both people. Ultimately, forgiveness means surrendering the right to retaliate, remembering the debt Jesus paid for us, and choosing compassion instead of hatred.
